Missing your Sunday football fix? Here’s something to lighten your day. The 2009 Stanley Cup which begins later today marks the first title rematch since the Edmonton Oilers and the New York Islanders met in 1983 and 1984. The Pittsburgh Penguins are headed back to the NHL championships, clinching a return trip with a 4-1 rout of the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday night that finished off a sweep in the Eastern Conference finals. The popular endorser of the “grip-it-and-rip-it” style of golf, 43 year-old double major winner, John Daly will return to the PGA Tour next month after a six-month suspension. He has played eight times overseas during his suspension, including a month in Europe, where he tied for second in the Italian Open. Barcelona simply manhandled Man U in Rome earlier today to take the UEFA Champions League Final with a 2-0 victory, thus denying coach Ferguson’s squad to become the first team to successfully defend its title since the competition changed its name and format from the European Cup and become only the third team ever to repeat as League and European Champions (Real Madrid and Ajax are the others). Coming on the heels of winning the NBA’s Most Valuable Player award, Nike has produced a new LeBron James shoe. According to their website, Nike states that the shoe is quite light yet responsive and provides, “super-responsive performance cushioning that brings the foot closer to the ground for optimum feel and aggressive maneuverability.” Sean Faris (“Reunion”, “Life as We Know It”) stars as Rick Penning, a talented-but-troubled rugby player who must play against the team his stern father (Neal McDonough) coaches at the national championship. That’s right the former Defensive Player of the Year and holder of the NFL’s single season sack record is back into football. One of the team leaders that helped the New York Giants win Super Bowl XLII, Strahan will co-star in a new half-hour comedy about a former NFL hot shot who learns that even though you can always go home again, the trip back might be tougher than you think. The tennis world’s toughest two week test on clay begins today at venerable Roland Garros in that city of lights, Paris, with the 119th edition of the French Open. The key story for the singles scene this year focuses on both world no.1’s for different reasons as they each aim for the premier championships on their favorite surface. One of the crown jewels of motor sports, the Indy 500 has always had compelling storylines and this year will be no different. Helio Castroneves (this year’s pole sitter and a two-time winner) and Danica Patrick (the sport’s glamour girl) will be headliners, especially from non-race fans for off-track stories, but there are 31 other drivers that are every bit as ambitious and many teams that will do everything they can to make sure they’re the ones that come out of the 500 the new champions. Steady Scott Dixon could easily come away with another win. Paul Newman’s joy of auto racing accelerated after his starring turn in this 1969 film. Newman is Frank Capua a rising star on the race circuit who dreams of winning the ultimate–the Indianapolis 500. |
