Usain Bolt: World’s Fastest Man…. Just Got Faster

Triple Olympic champion Usain Bolt of Jamaica smashed his own 100 meters world record with a stunning time of 9.58 seconds to win the final on Sunday at the IAAF World Track Championships in Berlin.
Last August in the 100-meter final at the Beijing Olympics , Bolt shattered a world record in the event even though he began celebrating at the 90-meter mark. Bolt explained by saying he didn’t care about the time, just the gold medal. Still, people wondered: “How fast can he go if he runs through the tape?”
70,000 fans at Berlin’s Olympic stadium witnessed just how fast. Bolt ran .11 seconds faster than his time from Beijing, the biggest improvement in the 100-meter record since electronic timing began in 1968.
Amazingly it is a full two-tenths faster than Ben Johnson ran in his steroid-fueled “victory” at the 1988 Olympics, where he was eventually disqualified and Carl Lewis was named the winner with a time of 9.92.
The showdown with American Tyson Gay didn’t really materialize as the Jamaican had a near-perfect start, grabbing the lead after only 20 meters and storming to the line with no pre-tape celebration.
Gay clocked 9.71 to take silver, setting an American record and Jamaican Asafa Powell claimed the bronze.
What’s next? Can the Insane Usain do to his 200 meter record what he did to his 100 meter mark? The men’s 200 meter final is Thursday.
