The 2010 Masters – Who is Your Pick?
Phil Mickelson Less worries about his family’s health, six straight birdies last week on the back nine in Houston, the two-time Masters champion is coming on despite a relatively slow start for him (Lefty hasn’t finished better than eighth in any of his seven tournaments so far this season.)
Retief Goosen Like his South African comrade, Mr. Els, Retief is playing well at this time with two fourth-place results and two fifths already this season. The double U.S. Open champion is a terrific putter on fast-greens and The Goose has four top three results at the Masters.
Padraig Harrington Despite a hiccup at Houston where a final round of 77 included two doubles and four bogeys, the three-time major champion has had good results at Augusta and handles the pressure well down the stretch. The question is- will he be among the leaders down the stretch?
Jim Furyk A solid record here along with a win for the first time since 2007 at last month’s Transitions Championship, Furyk will come in with the confidence it will take to win.
Tiger Woods The four-time Masters champion has proven an ability to focus once he laces up the spikes. His off-course issues won’t be as big a concern as much as the rust that comes without competitive rounds when facing the brutal short game that Augusta demands.
Mike Weir One of those players where the weather comes more into play with his game. If it rains, the course may be stretched a bit long for the former champ. Sunshine may see him among the contenders Sunday.
Lucas Glover The reigning U.S. Open champion really hasnt played well lately, but then again he didn’t before breaking through for a major win at Bethpage.
Ernie Els The Big Easy, this year’s only multiple winner so far this season, is playing his best since injuring his knee a few years ago. Clearly knows how to win majors, but will Els add a Green Jacket to that list? He should be there among the leaders on Sunday’s back nine.
Lee Westwood The talented English veteran has the game to score well here. It seems more a matter of performing under pressure, but then again that applies to most all the field! But in Lee’s case he’s missed final-hole putts to reach a playoff on two separate occasions in the past two years.
Rory McIlroy The young phenom will have his day, but not before he takes care of his ailing back.
Dustin Johnson Another young talent and with three titles already, may have the nerves to contend. Look out.
And the winner is?
Angel Cabrera
The Argentinian big man with a velvety touch is my pick to win, thus becoming the first back-to-back winner since Woods in 2001-02.
