For a team that was supposed to be in transition, experiencing a youth movement and without their captain, Germany, fresh off a dominating quarterfinal victory over Argentina, now faces Spain, the world’s number one ranked team in the semifinals Wednesday in Durban.
Coach Joachim Low has his team peaking at the right time. Germany is overpowering anyone and everyone, outscoring opponents 13-2 (8-1 against Argentina and England). Miroslav Klose scored twice against Argentina giving him a share of second place all-time in world cup history with 14.
Spain, who is the defending Euro 2008 champs, survived a wild game against Paraguay, but despite wins over Chile and Honduras have not been all that impressive, especially an embarrassing opening gloss to Switzerland.
Outside the brilliant offensive play of David Villa, the Spaniards are going to have to kick into a higher gear if they are to reach the Final. They certainly have the talent to do so, but stars like Fernando Torres have under performed to this point.
Look for Germany to advance from here.
