After years of fighting to get this story of boxer brothers Dicky Eklund and Micky Ward from the hardscrabble town of Lowell, Massachusetts off the canvas, actor/producer Mark Wahlberg triumphed with The Fighter scoring a one-two punch at the 83rd Academy Awards ceremony held at Kodak Theater in downtown Los Angeles Sunday night.
First-time nominee Christian Bale, won Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Dicky, an amiable crack addict, former boxer and older brother to Micky (Wahlberg).
Melissa Leo won best supporting actress for her portrayal as Alice Ward, the formidable matriarch of a spectacularly dysfunctional family while also managing her sons’ boxing careers.
The sport has done very well comparatively speaking when it comes to earning Academy Awards. The Fighter now joins a respectable club in cinematic history.
Boxing’s Other Oscar includes victories in various categories for such films as:
*Million Dollar Baby (2005)
*Raging Bull (1981)
*When We Were Kings (1997)
*Somebody Up There Likes Me (1957)
