Jackie Robinson Film Project Announced

The legendary ballplayer is in play at Legendary Pictures which announced they are developing a film based on Jackie Robinson who broke major league baseball’s color barrier in 1947.

The entertainment firm’s CEO Thomas Tull is producing with Brian Helgeland (LA Confidential) the writer and director of the movie.  Former Disney chief Dick Cook is the executive producer.

No casting has been announced for this project, but actor Robert Redford has expressed interest over time in portraying Branch Rickey, the Dodger executive that scouted and signed Robinson.  

There have been both film and television portrayals of Robinson through the years.

Very few athletes have portrayed themselves on the silver screen, but Robinson is one of them. He starred in the 1950 picture, “The Jackie Robinson Story”.   Actress Ruby Dee who played his wife in that film, played his mother 40 years later in the television movie ’”The Court Martial of Jackie Robinson”.
