Ed Sabol Highlights Football Hall of Fame Induction Class

A 94-year-old former overcoat salesman from Philadelphia, Ed Sabol, in a long, long overdue tribute to the game of football will join the sport’s immortals this weekend after being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The founder of NFL Films, who simply revolutionized how we experience the game, will be presented by his son Steve, NFL Films President who is battling brain cancer.

Sabol will be inducted along with RB Marshall Faulk (1994-2005) , DE Richard Dent (1983-1997), TE Shannon Sharpe (1996-2003), CB/KR Deion Sanders (1989-2005), LB Chris Hanburger (1965-1978) and the late LB Les Richter (1954-1962). The ceremonies take place today in Canton, Ohio.

What started out with Sabol buying the rights to film the 1962 NFL championship game between the New York Giants and Green Bay Packers — the $3,000 expense launched his film empire that would win more than 80 Emmy Awards and influence the way not only sports but visual storytelling in general would be approached.

Sabol and Company came out of the box with a string of innovations as they were the first to put microphones on coaches, players and officials; the first to use reverse-angle replay; the first to create blooper reels and the first to score footage with music (alot of it original), but perhaps most importantly develop a style using slo-motion photography with isos, montages and compelling close-ups that have been emulated well beyond the playing fields of sports.
