The Pac-12 Conference boasts a pair of top 10 teams in the preseason USA Today Coaches Top 25 rankings with No. 3 Oregon and No. 6 Stanford. The Broncos BCS fortunes rest on the undersized shoulders of southpaw sophomore quarterback Kellen Moore. The savvy and efficient Moore threw 25 TDs as a redshirt freshman. Boise State have won at least 10 games seven out of the last nine years and there is no reason their winning ways will end this season. These perennial conference powers will be there again as Jim Tressel welcomes back seven starting defenders and four on offense to this year’s team. The Buckeyes key to success in winning at least ten games each of the past four seasons is the defense’s ability to limit the opponents scoring, a category they have been among the national leaders for some time. It was under 14 last year. The defense will be led by top tackler Kurt Coleman and converted linebacker-to-rusher Thaddeus Gibson. But like last year, the Big Ten crown will likely come down to a match with Penn State. Despite going with an untested quarterback (incoming freshman Matt Barkley) taking over the reigns from Mark Sanchez (now starting for the New York Jets) , new offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates will also play youthful running backs with emerging sophomore Curtis McNeal and redshirt freshman Curtis McNeal on a squad with twelve returning starters. Should Barkley falter, an even younger player will step in, redshirt sophomore Aaron Corp. Mack Brown has 14 starters returning. The Longhorns are long on defense with 48 sacks to lead the nation last year, but they also lost end Brian Orakpo who won the Bronko Nagurski Award as the country’s top collegiate defender. Veteran Sergio Kindle and newcomer on the end position, Alex Okafor, could cause a lot of disruptions to opposing offenses this year. No doubt their game against rival Oklahoma will have national title implications. |
