Sean Faris (“Reunion”, “Life as We Know It”) stars as Rick Penning, a talented-but-troubled rugby player who must play against the team his stern father (Neal McDonough) coaches at the national championship. Based on actual events connected to the dominant Highland Rugby program, Rick’s road to turning his life around begins at the juvenile detention center he has been sent to. It is there that a counselor (Sean Astin – “Rudy”) gets the confused teen heading in a new direction. When well-respected coach Larry Gelwix (Gary Cole) recruits Rick for his storied rugby squad, training for sports success takes on a deeper meaning. [...]
Where did the idea for the story come from? Originally, I had conceived Rudo y Cursi (Tough and Corny) as a mockumentary about Tato, a player from humble origins that attains glory within professional soccer, but disappears mysteriously and becomes a legend. When I told Diego and Gael the story, they both wanted to play Tato, which was really cool. The problem was that there was only one character. That is when I realized that I wanted to work with both of them together again and I had to grow the story to two characters. The first thing that came to my mind was the image of two soccer players solving an intimate drama right before shooting a penalty in front of a full stadium. Then I thought, why not make them siblings, so I started constructing the story backwards. [...]
From Wimbledon champions to Indy 500 winners to gold medal sprinters, at the very top there is a small margin of difference. The same thing applies to the best movies. It gets as competitive and difficult as picking your fantasy baseball team or predicting a Super Bowl winner in October. [...]

Before all the accolades that came with writing an Oscar-nominated film (“The Wrestler”), Robert Siegel wrote and directed a small picture using football as a backdrop on the psychology of obsession. Having scored in a run through the film festivals, “Big Fan” has garnered some critical momentum that may yield broader distribution. One of the reasons why is that the story rings of a sad truth. [...]
Sometimes our youthful dreams can lead us in one direction only to find they lead us to a different path toward self-discovery. This is the case in Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s story about the often lonely and ultra-competitive world of young men striving to become professional baseball players. [...]
Quick. Name the greatest lacrosse movie of all-time. Stumped? Well name the best lacrosse player to succeed in Hollywood as an actor. Answer below.* The popular underdog comedy format will use lacrosse as the backdrop for “Crooked Arrow”. In keeping with the sport’s American Indian roots, the film’s story centers on a 30-something of mixed blood who puts off his dreams of a casino empire to coach a weak native American high school team against the prep school league in which he used to shine. [...]
Golf is one of the world’s most popular participatory sports and some of the most zealous duffers play the Hollywood game as well. The whole spectrum of show business, from A-level performers to high-flying agents and powerful studio producers swing on a regular basis. Translating that passion to the silver screen has been well, a little like needing to slide in a 20 foot downhill multi-breaking putt at Augusta National to make the cut at the Masters. There are elements of golf that simply don’t lend itself to the film camera. Going against the grain are the facts that it is an individual endeavor (Ryder Cup notwithstanding) that is primarily a mental exercise where channeling one’s emotions inward is performed in a rather quiet environment that takes four days to determine a winner, using a slow-pace where there isn’t much interaction between competitors.
