This year’s Fall Classic promises one thing – there will be a new champion. The Giants have never won since moving to San Francisco and Texas has never been to the World Series. It is time for the 49ers offense to step it up and match the consistently good play of the defense. In order for that to happen, conservative head coach Mike Singletary must allow offensive coordinator, Jimmy Raye, to be at least selectively aggressive. After all that was Mike’s trademark in his defensive playing days. Coach Mike Singletary has got his team buying in to the ball control run-oriented offense, though Frank Gore’s recent injury could put veteran quarterback Shaun Hill in a tough spot to have to be a playmaker. Defensively the Niners are led by All-Pro linebacker Patrick Willis and if he can stay healthy, an emerging star in safety Dashan Goldson. This past Thursday the Big Unit joined an exclusive small unit by earning his 300th win as the San Francisco Giants defeated the Washington Nationals 5-1. The 45-year-old Johnson is the sixth left-hander to win 300 games and the second-oldest pitcher to reach the milestone. Knuckleballer Phil Niekro was 46 when he won his 300th with the New York Yankees in 1985. Arizona Diamondbacks Lots of young bats should take advantage of one of the more offense-oriented ballparks, but they won’t go far without cutting down on the k’s. Arizona’s offense was second in the majors in striking out. Five starters from Justin Upton and Mark Reynolds to catcher Chris Snyder each exceeded the century mark in whiffs. Not good. |
